The reason the US Leads in Infant and Maternal Mortality Rates: Quality education through

In the United States, infant mortality rates are significantly higher than in other developed countries. And Black women are disproportionately affected, dying at three to four times the rate of white women from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.

So, what’s going on? Why is the US such an outlier when it comes to infant and maternal mortality? Some experts say it’s because our health care system is failing us. Others point to socio-economic factors like poverty and racism. But whatever the reasons, one thing is clear: We need to do better. We owe it to our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends to make sure that they receive the best possible care during pregnancy and childbirth.

A factor still being studied is the PTSD Black mothers feel from the many adversities they experience throughout life. Racism and gender discrimination over their lifetime is said to increase their risks for preterm birth and low birth weight. This occurs at a rate three times more than among non-Black mothers.

Another reason Black women suffer disproportionately during and after childbirth is that their concerns go unheard. In an article titled “Maternal Mortality: An American Crisis,” CBS news explores the story of Kira Johnson. She died after being scheduled for a c-section and needed a CT scan that was pushed back despite her husband’s efforts to advocate for her. Kira’s story mirrors many other tales of women or loved ones who voiced concerns that weren’t attended to. Ultimately suffering the consequences of negligence.

The United States has the unfortunate distinction of leading the world in infant and maternal mortality rates. This is a complex issue with many contributing factors, but there are ways to help address it. Stay engaged with our blog for more information on how you can improve these statistics and give your child the best chance at a healthy life.
